Daily Report

October 23 2025

On Wednesday we had cloudy conditions along with a few scattered showers throughout the day. Lake effect rain is expected as we head through the day on Thursday along cool and breezy conditions. Yesterdasy the anglers we spoke with who fished the DSR reported having another very good day with plenty of steelhead action along with some kings as well. Other anglers we spoke with reported getting into steelhead along with some kings around the Ballpark, Staircase and Black Hole area.  In the mid to upper end of the river anglers reported kings holding in and around the deeper holes and larger runs as well as spawning activity in the gravel areas. In the Upper Fly Fishing Only Area anglers have reported getting into a mix of kings and cohos. For those anglers who are fly fishing egg patterns have been producing steady results. For those anglers who are float fishing or bottom bouncing, egg sacs or beads have produced the best results. On the real windy days, when leaves are a factor, non leaf colors such as blue, pink and purple have been most productive.

The NYS DEC has Closed By Emergency Order The Lower Fly Fishing Catch & Release Area from September 15th through October 31st, 2025. Drought conditions have produced low and warm water conditions, therefore the Lower Fly Fishing Area will remain closed in order to help ensure an adequate Pacific salmon egg take at the Salmon River Hatchery during the fall 2025 spawning season. Any questions or concerns please contact the Region 7 Fisheries office at (607)753-3095 x 204.

Brookfield, in consultation with the New York State DEC, have decided to continue with the current 185 cfs base flow out of Lighthouse Hill for the beginning of September due to ongoing drought conditions coupled with low reservoir levels. This lowered base flow will remain reduced until the reservoir recovers to normal historic elevations for this time of year.
